On a hot summer day, during a Seventh Cavalry re-enactment, the horse
and soldier return from a day's ride. The sweat runs under the young
mans blue wool uniform and drips from the horse's belly; they seem to be
holding each other up as they walk home. The title comes from a
soldier's journal describing the life in the cavalry. I used a
scratchboard technique, which dates to ancient times. After
layering the china clay-coated board with ink, watercolor, or gouche.
The picture is scratched out with a sharp tool. A rendering
results as one scrapes the layers of color. This piece was include
in the book "ART OF THE AMERICAN WEST", published by Quarry
books,1999. |
